Typing Test Questions

How is WPM calculated?

+

WPM (Words Per Minute) is calculated using the industry-standard formula: (Correct Characters / 5) / Time in Minutes. We divide by 5 because the average word length is 5 characters. This is the same method used by professional typing tests.

What's the difference between WPM and Raw WPM?

+

WPM is your net typing speed after accounting for errors. Raw WPM is your speed without any accuracy penalty. Raw WPM shows your raw typing speed, while WPM reflects your practical, accurate typing speed.

What's a good typing speed?

+

Average typists reach around 40 WPM. 60+ WPM is considered good, 80+ is excellent, and 100+ is expert level. Professional typists often exceed 120 WPM. Focus on accuracy first, because 95%+ accuracy at any speed is more valuable than fast, error-prone typing.

How do I restart a test?

+

You can restart by clicking the "Restart" button, pressing Tab, or pressing Escape. The test will reset immediately with new words.

Features & Tools

What is the Keyboard Tester for?

+

The Keyboard Tester is a diagnostic tool that lets you test every key on your keyboard. Press any key to see it light up on the visual keyboard. It's perfect for identifying faulty keys, testing new keyboards, or checking if all keys register properly.

How does the Keyboard Heatmap work?

+

The heatmap tracks every keystroke during your typing tests and visualizes the frequency with colors. Blue means a key is used rarely and red means it is used frequently. This helps you identify which keys you use most and which ones need more practice.

How many languages are supported?

+

TypingSpeedTest.co currently supports 8 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, and Japanese. Each language has native word lists and quotes.

Can I switch languages mid-test?

+

Yes, but the test will restart with new words in the selected language. Your progress in the current test will not be saved. Change language using the dropdown in the test configuration bar.

Data & Privacy

Is my data safe?

+

Your typing results are stored locally on your device. The site also uses consent-managed analytics and advertising services, which you can review in the privacy policy and control through the consent banner and browser settings.

Will I lose my data if I clear my browser?

+

Yes. Since data is stored in LocalStorage, clearing your browser data will delete your typing history and settings. Future updates may include export and backup features.

Does the site use cookies or tracking?

+

The site uses consent-managed analytics and advertising services, plus local storage for your typing history and settings. See the privacy policy for the full breakdown and use the consent banner or browser settings to adjust your preferences.

Troubleshooting

The test will not start when I type

+

Make sure the typing area is focused. Click anywhere in the typing area or the text. If issues persist, try refreshing the page or using a different browser.

Some keys are not registering in the Keyboard Tester

+

If keys do not light up when pressed, this usually indicates a hardware issue, driver problem, or a faulty key. Try the keyboard on another device or test with a different keyboard.

The 3D background is laggy

+

The 3D particle effects use your GPU. If you see lag, try closing other tabs, updating your browser, or disabling the effect.
